Manchester United had made an offer in signing Barcelona star Neymar in the summer transfer window and the Premier League giants even placed an offer for his services, according to the player’s father.

The South American is one of the star players at Nou Camp and Louis van Gaal’s side were looking to bolster their attack by making a big name signing in the recently concluded transfer window.

Their long-term target was Real Madrid star Gareth Bale and Bayern Munich attacker Thomas Muller. Both the deals did not take shape, which was United chief executive Ed Woodward shift focus on Neymar.

The forward’s father, Neynmar Santos Sr admitted United had placed an offer for his son’s signature. However, Barcelona turned down the English club’s approach as they had no intention in allowing him leave.

“The offer reached Barcelona and the club contacted us saying they were not going to sell. They asked if we were interested but that wasn’t the case. Barcelona are not selling, he has three years still to go on his contract,” the Brazil international’s father told Boa Tarde Fox, as reported by The Guardian.

The Express reports Neymar has a £10m release clause in his contract. The forward’s father also confirmed United did not further pursue and as it stands, there have been no offers from them

“It was Manchester’s deal, but that offer is not on the table now, it has fallen through,” Neymar’s father explained.

United’s interest in Neymar came as a surprise and a majority of the fans were questioning the credibility of the new, when it broke in late August. Despite the fail transfer, it is very clear that United and Woodward have an intention of bringing world class players to Old Trafford.

In September, even Barcelona frontman confirmed to have held talks with United. Neymar told ESPN Brazil, “We had conversations, but there was nothing concrete. I heard that there were offers but none were made to me.”
