Injuries rule out three Manchester United defenders for Ipswich clash

RojoLouis van Gaal has a tough choice in selecting his defenders for Manchester United’s Capital One Cup clash against Ipswich Town. The Dutchman has confirmed Marcos Rojo and Paddy McNair has joined Luke Shaw in the list of injured players.

The former Southampton left-back suffered a double fracture on his leg during the Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven. He is set to be out of action for several months.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager confirmed the Argentine international has picked up a hamstring injury, while McNair has a minor injury. The situation has forced Van Gaal to get Phil Jones – who is close to making a return from injury – on the bench.

“Rojo has a hamstring injury and Paddy McNair has a minor injury. I have to admit that because of the injury of three defenders [including Luke Shaw], I shall have Jones on the bench but he is not fit,” Van Gaal told the club’s official website.

This could allow Ashley Young to feature as a left-back against Ipswich, while Daley Blind and Chris Smalling continue as the centre-backs in the Capital One Cup third round clash.

Young duo of James Wilson and Jesse Lingard were on the score sheet for United Under 21 side as they defeated Everton 2-1 earlier this week. Van Gaal confirmed both the attackers will not feature against Ipswich Town and they have been given a day off.

“I don’t need them so they can have a day off and then Thursday they will be fresh and can train,” United manager said.
