Every club makes mistakes while dealing with transfers, which includes both bringing in a new player and also making an effort to keep hold the best players. Manchester United and Chelsea are the two big clubs in the Premier League and the two clubs would have felt that they could have done better, especially in the summer window.
United under the managerial guidance of Louis van Gaal are looking to regain their supremacy in England. Chelsea, on the other hand have struggled in the new season after winning the title last term.
The game week 1 of this campaign’s Champions League match ended as three out of the four clubs, United, Arsenal and Manchester City lost their respective matches. Chelsea was the only team that managed to win.
The English teams have struggled in the European competition as only Manchester United and Chelsea have won the Champions League in last 15 years. The Red Devils have made it to three more finals in this period, while Arsenal managed one in between.
Both clubs are in need of a player who can help them achieve success at both domestic and European stage. One player who can improve either clubs’ squad is Paul Pogba, who left Old Trafford and joined Juventus on a free transfer in 2012.
The French international has went on to win the Serie A every year since joining the Turin club. Last season, he was instrumental, along with Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo in the Italian club’s midfield.
Manchester United:
Van Gaal signed Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin in the summer and the two, along with Michael Carrick are instrumental in United’s midfield. At 34, the England international is in twilight of his career, while the World Cup winner with Germany has few years of top flight football left in him.
Ander Herrera can play in multiple positions and has done a very good job since joining them from Athletic Bilbao in 2014. However, United need a player who can win the tackles and headers regularly.
Pogba is a player who does it comfortably and he will link up very well with Wayne Rooney, Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial in helping the trio score. In terms of defence, he will act like a shield and while attacking, he can provide United what Yaya Toure does to Manchester City.
While having players like Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger and Carrick, Pogba can excel in his role in the midfield as he is aware that having either of the three next to him in the midfield will give him license to play hi natural game.
Chelsea:
The Blues did not strengthen his side’s midfield in the summer. A year before in January, Jose Mourinho resigned Nemanja Matic for Chelsea. Six months later Cesc Fabregas came to Stamford Bridge from Barcelona.
The duo were instrumental in helping Chelsea win the Premier League and the Capital One Cup last season. However, the former Arsenal star was not able to help the English side push them in the European competition.
Fabregas’ form has dipped this season and has been subjected to heavy criticism as Chelsea have struggled so far. The Spain international’s position has left his midfield partner Patic come out of position and fill in for Fabregas.
When this happens, Matic is left wide open due to Fabregas’ fault. The two are drawn out of position due to one player’s error. Having Pogba at Chelsea will give them more stability while defending. When going forward, Pogba can provide the threat what Frank Lampard used to give the reigning English champions.
Pogba’s contract at Juventus runs down in 2019 and is valued to be more than €100m by the Old Lady’s chief executive Giuseppe Marotta. If he moves to United or Chelsea, that club is likely to be in firm position to win the league and also give them the boost to challenge for the European glory.
