Louis van Gaal has admitted he will be happy if Manchester United manages to avoid a defeat when they face PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League clash on Tuesday.
The Dutchman and his men will travel to the Netherlands as they return to the Europe’s top tier club competition after one year’s absence. They made it to the group stages after defeating Club Brugge in the play-offs.
The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager is aware of the importance of the away leg and also the difficulty in these fixtures. Van Gaal admitted winning these big games will be a challenge for the Red Devils.
“For me it’s a difficult ground to go, I didn’t win so much here, not with Barcelona, or with Ajax. However I think I did win with AZ Alkmaar,” Van Gaal explained.
“A draw away is always a good result in my opinion – but I want to win. The first match is always very important and the same is also true for PSV. I’ll be playing with my best team, as I always do.”
“We have to show on the pitch if we are able to win matches at the highest level in my opinion – that is the challenge for us now.
“Last year we were fourth in the Premier League and because of that we qualified for the Champions League, but now we have to show we can play at this level. I don’t know if we can, I have to wait and see,” he added.
United sealed a 3-1 victory over Liverpool in the Premier League over the weekend at home. The former Netherlands manager will be looking for another victory over PSV in Group B clash on Tuesday.
A win in the Champions League, that too in the away fixture will be crucial for Van Gaal and United.
