Wayne Rooney has become England’s all-time leading goal scorer, after he scored his 50th goal for his country on Tuesday evening.
The Manchester United striker broke Sir Bobby Charlton’s record during the Three Lion’s 2-0 win over Switzerland at Wembley. His record breaking goal has been the talk of social media since yesterday, and YouTuber RedWay7 has compiled a beautiful video of every international goal scored by the England striker.
Rooney opened his goal scoring for England against Macedonia in 2003, as a 17-year-old kid, and thereafter has scored several memorable goals in his career.
Chelsea skipper John Terry has hailed him as England’s finest player of all time, though the topic is up for debate.
While talking about Rooney, people still hold the image of a boisterous and fearless teenager who made his mark on the international stages in Euro 2004. Apart from that one major tournament, his goals have never helped England to reach the dizzy heights, despite him being an integral part of England’s golden generation that included players like Gerrard, Beckham, Lampard, Ashley Cole et al.
Unlike Charlton, Gascoigne, Bryan Robson or Gary Linekar, he hasn’t really performed on big stages when required.
At the same time, Rooney probably stands alone as England’s only world class player in the last 5-6 years, and his 50 goals in 107 internationals stands aside some of the modern greats like Cristiano Ronaldo (55 goals in 122 internationals) & Lionel Messi (49 goals in 105 caps).
Anyway, enjoy the 10 minutes video below. Congrats, Wayne!
