Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has finally lifted the lid on his strained relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson.

The pair had often clashed during Fergie’s tenure as a Manchester United manager. At one point it appeared that their relationship had broken down for good and that Rooney was angling for a move away.

The Manchester United fan favourite was linked with a move to Chelsea, before he signed a new contract under David Moyes.

Rooney has now responded to the speculations and claimed that no one actually knows what happened between them and that they are still in good terms.

The England star also claimed that despite their differences he believes that Sir Alex is the best manager of all time.

Furthermore, he also explained how it is quite normal to have differences of opinion, citing Hodgson as an example.

“I don’t know if anyone knows how things ended [between us]. We had differences [of opinion] but that’s normal,” said the 29-year-old, who was prised to Manchester by Ferguson in 2004.

“Ask Roy [Hodgson]. He’s had differences with players over the years, too. That’s part of football.

“I’m not the only person who had differences with Sir Alex Ferguson but I can still sit here and say he was the greatest manager of all time.

“I still see Sir Alex quite a bit at games and he travels away to European games with us. It’s not that we don’t like each other. We just had differences. That’s normal.”

It is indeed quite normal to have a difference of opinion amongst the players or the manager.

But it cannot be denied that Rooney has taken advantage of his status at United to multiply his wages, over the years.

And in such a scenario, Fergie’s disagreements with the player and willingness to let him go can hardly be criticised.
