Manchester United enquired about the possibility of signing Marco Reus from Borussia Dortmund, when negotiating Adnan Januzaj’s loan to the German club, but the Red Devils refused to match the player’s £60m valuation, as per reports from ESPN.
The Red Devils are close to signing a striker / forward on Tuesday’s deadline, with a deal for Monaco’s Anthony Martial being lined up. The 19-year-old has completed his medical and will be presented shortly.
Dortmund wanted a fee in the region of £60m, but the Old Trafford club were only willing to go as far as £50m.
It is indeed baffling that United have agreed to pay €80m for an unproven talent while they were unwilling to pay extra £10m to sign a world class forward.
Take a look at some of the reactions from fans / journos on Twitter:
Of course we rejected Reus, Also rejected Messi, Ronaldo and Bale and told Neuer Romero is better than him. #MUFC

@JordySloan WTF…They wanted to sign Neymar for € 190 mln and can not pay 60 for Reus? It’s a joke. Reus is a crack as well.

Class that we can’t just pay £60m for Reus. Class that. Class.

So #MUFC spend £36+ on Martial but were put off because Dortmund wanted £60 for Reus, a proven world class player. Genuine logic there!

Can’t believe we wouldn’t stretch an extra 10 million for Reus. Sad times!

Marco Reus for £60M and you think it’s too much?! You just signed Anthony Martial for €80M!!! #MUFC

If United are talking to BVB about one of their highly rated players going on loan, it’s not a leap of faith to assume Reus came up y’know.
