Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal recently stated in the press conference that he will be looking to sign a creative attacking midfielder in the summer.
With Michael Carrick ageing and Ander Herrera yet to convince his manager, Van Gaal has used Wayne Rooney in the midfield role.
“Of course that’s the case. I’m looking for balance and I need it in midfield,” said Van Gaal as quoted by MEN.
“The last games I played with Adnan Januzaj and Angel Di Maria in the midfield positions. Then you need a certain balance for those kind of creative players.”
Mark Ogden of The Telegraph covered the story in details as well and he adds that Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba and Roma’s Kevin Strootman are two such players Van Gaal would be trying to bring at Old Trafford next summer.
While Pogba is happy at Juventus, his agent has revealed recently that the French midfielder would be willing to move provided the offer is right.
Pogba won’t come in cheap and would cost anything around 40-50m if not more. In a recent poll conducted by MEN, 81% of United fans want United to sign Pogba in summer.
The 21-year-old left United in 2012 to join Juventus and went on to establish himself as one of the best young central midfielders in the world.
While many think his departure from the club was mainly down to his wage demands, Pogba admitted that he turned United contracts because he was not guaranteed regular game time by Sir Alex Ferguson.
He told The Times: “I didn’t want to sign a contract as Ferguson didn’t play me, even though there were no midfielders there.
“He obviously thought I didn’t deserve the contract I asked for, and didn’t put me in the team even though he had no midfield players. It was his choice.
“United were short of players like me, but it was the manager’s decision. I couldn’t do anything about it. I was frustrated because he spoke to me a few times and said I was nearly there.
“I told him ‘If I don’t play then I can’t get any experience and see how far I have to go’. I played a few cup games but he didn’t want to give me a contract and they just let me go.”
In recent years, we have seen Chelsea swallowing their pride and paid huge amount to bring back their former player Nemanja Matic. Will United take a similar sort of approach in bringing back Pogba?
