Portuguese winger Nani has revealed that Manchester United have urged him not to leave Old Trafford.
The 28-year-old will have three years left on his contract at the end of the season and is currently on a season-long loan at Sporting Lisbon. He has been in impressive form for the Portuguese outfit and has been one of the standout performers for Marco Silva’s side.
Nani had multiple injuries in the last few seasons while playing for United, which has seen him settle for a limited first team appearances. The winger claims that a loan spell away from Old Trafford has helped him regain his confidence, which has seen him get assurance over his United future.
“The club know my value and I know they want me to stay. It was me who made the choice to leave the club and it was a good decision by me because I knew if I stayed one more season at Old Trafford, it would be very hard for me,” Nani said.
“I just need someone to believe in me, trust me and my qualities, and give me an opportunity to show them on the pitch.”
“It’s an experience I wanted a lot and needed as well because the last two seasons at Manchester United I had so many injuries and I was very upset with a lot of things that happened to me.”
“I was missing my family and friends and I wanted something new. The only opportunity I had to be happy, and Manchester United to be happy as well, was this one,” the Portuguese winger stressed.
Louis van Gaal has the services of Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia has the first choice wingers in the squad, who have featured as wing-backs or full-backs this season. The Dutchman has also allowed Wilfried Zaha to leave Old Trafford on-loan as he is at Crystal Palace till the end of the season.
In the summer, both Nani and Zaha will return to the parent club and it is likely that the Portuguese will continue to be a part of United’s first team after a string of impressive performance at Sporting.
