Manchester United registered a 2-0 victory over Yeovil Town in the third round FA Cup clash away from home on Sunday.
The latest win has helped them progress to the next round of the FA Cup and the victory came at a cost as full-backs Rafael and Luke Shaw were replaced after the break as both suffered injuries.
Louis van Gaal confirmed the Brazilian and the England international have now joined the list of injured players at Old Trafford. The Dutchman confirmed that Rafael has fractured his cheekbone, while Shaw picked up a knock to his ankle.
“I think we have a lot of problems in the first half. Rafael da Silva has an injury, a fracture of his bone. So it was fantastic the cuts that he played through but I have to change him and also Luke Shaw had an ankle problem, so I had to change him also,” Van Gaal said, as reported by the Guardian.
“We have to wait and see [with Rafael] because he is now already taken away in a car. I don’t know [how it happened], I have to watch the video again.”
“It was a duel, also the same with Shaw. It was a very physical game I think. Rafael played through because the last weeks he doesn’t play so much any more, now he can play and he’s injured,” he added.
United are already without Ashley Young, who picked up a hamstring injury during United’s 1-1 draw against Stoke City on New Year’s day.
Meanwhile, Angel Di Maria returned to action from injury and scored United’s second goal after coming from the substitute’s bench. Van Gaal will have a tough task during the team selection for the upcoming league fixture against Southampton.
