Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has praised the club CEO Ed Woodward for his efforts in making signings during the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils have made quality additions to their squad after finishing a disappointing seventh in the league table last season, missing out on European football as a result.
After a poor showing during the previous summer transfer window, the 20-time English champions have signed Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind and Radamel Falcao this term. Di Maria arrived at Old Trafford from Real Madrid for a British transfer record of £59.7m.
The former United midfielder says Louis van Gaal should guide his side to finish the season in top four. However, Scholes says the league title is still a far shot.
“Credit has to go to Ed Woodward, who has left Van Gaal a squad that should be capable of finishing in the top four. I don’t think the league title is realistic but Champions League football is the aim. Now it is over to Van Gaal to shape the team,” Scholes wrote in his column in the Independent.
“The big question for the United manager will be how he gives all his players games. That is quite some squad and only two competitions left to play for. That is a nice problem to have.”
After allowing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic leave Old Trafford at the end of the last season, the Premier League giants have failed to bring in replacement for the two United former star defenders.
So far this season, United have failed to win any of the competitive fixtures. Their defence has been shaky and not adding an experienced defender could cost them the Champions League spot.
Meanwhile, United allowed Danny Welbeck leave Old Trafford and join Arsenal on the final day of the summer transfer window. The former midfielder has expressed his disappointment after United allowed their academy graduate to leave Old Trafford.
“Naturally, I was sad, as a United fan, to see Welbeck leave this week. My feeling was that if he could have got through this transfer window and stayed at the club he could have been a part of United’s future over the next few years,” Old Trafford favourite seed.
“It shows how highly regarded Danny is that a club as big as Arsenal signed him. He will be a good signing for Arsène Wenger. Danny will never be a 20-25 goals-a-season man but he could get Arsenal 10 to 15.”
A section of United fans will agree with Scholes’ comments on the English striker. Welbeck failed to get regular playing time at Old Trafford and when he did get a chance to shine, he was played out of position.
Welbeck hardly played as a central striker at United and was always behind Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney in the pecking order. The Englishman was never given a proper chance to shine at United and his departure to Arsenal could help him revive his career as a central striker for the Gunners.
