Jamie Carragher has backed Liverpool’s latest signing Dejav Lovren to become the Reds’ future captain after Steven Gerrard decides to call it a day.
The Croatian international arrived at Anfield from Southampton after having a dazzling season with the Saints. The former England international is long been wearing the captain’s armband for the Merseyside club and has few years of top flight left under his belt.
The former Liverpool defender believes Lovren could go on grown over the years and establish himself as a crucial player at Liverpool in the coming seasons.
The Anfield legend Carragher says it is a proud moment to wear the captain’s armband, who was the vice-captain in the latter stages of his career, behind Gerrard.
“Centre-backs normally make great captains,” Carragher told the Liverpool ECHO.
“I think if Lovren establishes himself in the team became a top player by showing the same form he has at Southampton for Liverpool, then in the next few years when Stevie does decide to call it day he will be in contention.”
“You look at him and he has the potential to make a big powerful impact at the back and that’s what Liverpool need. Jordan Henderson is another who could possibly be in contention and there will be more who arrive in that time that could be up for it as well.”
“But if Lovren can come in and produce that sort of form then I am sure he will be in the running for it.”
“It is a real sign of pride and a huge responsibility to wear the captain’s armband though. You think of the captains that have gone before and you think of how long Stevie has had it – and rightly so – then it deserves that special mark of respect.”
“I know when I wore it I had immense pride, I was never the true captain I was always the vice behind Stevie but hopefully it’ll be a few years before it does become available,” the former Liverpool star added.
Martin Skrtel is another candidate to be Liverpool’s future captain. However, the Slovakian international, 29, is likely to pass his peak before Gerrard decides to end his club career. At the end of the day, it is Brendan Rodgers’ decision as to who will be Liverpool’s captain.
Gerrard, 34, could not feature regularly for Liverpool in the next season and this could see the former Swansea man throw the arm-band to Skrtel, who could be a regular inclusion in his side’s playing XI next season.
