Manchester United have scouted Portugal midfielder William Carvalho for… well…lost count actually…number of times over the past one year. However, that interest somewhat died down once Manchester United had appointed Louis van Gaal as their new manager.

There could be multiple explanations for that. First, the new manager wants to stamp his own authority and probably doesn’t rate the player that much like his predecessor. Secondly, United probably recognise his vast talent but are unwilling to meet his €45m transfer fee. And Sporting are hell-bent not to enter into any negotiation unless the transfer value is met. As a natural consequence United are forced to seek options elsewhere.

But, the situation could change if the player himself wants a move. The Sporting Lisbon midfielder who remained tight lipped on his future so far, now admitted he is not so sure anymore.

“Will I stay at Sporting? I don’t know. I’m going back to Portugal and then we’ll see,” Carvalho said in an interview with MaisFutebol, relayed by Sky Sports, after Portugal’s 2-1 win over Ghana.

Carvalho played all 90 minutes in the victory over Ghana and 45 minutes in the 2-2 draw with the USA, but couldn’t stop Portugal crashing out of the tournament so early.

Several European heavy weights like Real Madrid and Monaco are vying for his signature, so it remains to be seen whether Manchester United at all make any move for him in the summer.

Manchester United definitely need a strong defensive holding midfielder. But, will they pay such ridiculous transfer fee for a 22-year-old? Furthermore, United have been linked with players like Toni Kroos or Bastian Schweinsteiger, who are already recognised stars in world football and would cost less as well.
