Manchester United legend Gary Pallister believes Tottenham Hotspur could hijack their move in signing Southampton star Luke Shaw after Spurs appointed Mauricio Pochettino as their manager for the next season.
The 18-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window. In addition to this, Chelsea are also believed to in the frame for the left-back’s signature.
Pallister, the former United centre-back fears Shaw’s rise under Pochettino at St Mary’s Stadium could temp the England international to follow the former Southampton manager to White Hart Lane.
“He [Pochettino] has that relationship with him already,” Pallister told Talksport.
“I heard Shaw saying how delighted he was to play for him and what he has done for his game. It could be a spanner in the works for United, who were said to be close to doing a deal for Shaw.”
“If you have got that personal insight into a player and that personal relationship, it gives you an added advantage,” he added.
Meanwhile, Shaw took to Twitter to thank the Argentine manager after Pochettino left Southampton for Tottenham.
“Would like to thank Mauricio For everything he has done for me. Great manager , great guy and has helped me a lot. Wish him all the best,” Shaw tweeted
United have the services of Patrice Evra and Alexander Buttner as the left-back in the squad. The French international recently extended his stay at Old Trafford by penning down a new one-year deal.
However, Shaw is believed to be a long-term replacement for Evra for United. Should Tottenham manage to beat the Red Devils for the full-back’s services, it will be a major blow for the club and their incoming manager Louis van Gaal.
