Feyenoord Technical director Martin van Geel has admitted 22-year-old centre back Stefan De Vrij could be sold in the summer.
Premier League clubs are on red alert after Feyenoord’s technical director, Martin va Geel told ‘Algemeen Dagblad‘ that contract talks with Stefan De Vrij have stalled till after the World Cup:
“Talks have stopped and we will wait for the summer. With De Vrij, we have already made the decision to wait until after the World Cup (before re-evaluating the situation).”
De Vrij had been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool in the past. The young defender, with his continental approach to defending, was thought be a perfect replacement of Jamie Carragher, who retired at the end of last season.
Liverpool have earlier scouted the centre back but failed to sign him. The Dutch star appreciated the interest from the Merseyside club but didn’t want to leave.
“It’s nice to hear such big clubs are interested in you. But I’m not making a transfer. When you see how strong Vlaar was when he left, then I still need some time,” confessed De Vrij, back in 2012.
De Vrij is a highly rated in his home country, and considered one of the best talents in Dutch football. Despite being only 22, he took the captain’s armband from Ron Vlaar, who left for Aston Villa last season.
Tall, physical, and composed on the ball, De Vrij’s reading of the game is also very impressive. Plus, he is versatile. His preferred position is the centre-back role but can play as right-back as well.
Brendan Rodgers could be looking to add few defenders next season, with the futures of Agger, Toure and Coates all in doubt.
De Vrij could be a terrific signing for the Merseyside giants. Not only he would be available for cheap, but would bring genuine quality to the side.
