AS Roma are preparing to take full advantage of Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini’s uncertain future at the club by placing an offer of £4.5 million-a-year contract in the summer.
The Italian’s position at the club is uncertain at the moment with his side off the pace in the Premier League. They are 12 points adrift of league leaders Manchester United while FA Cup remains their only realistic chance of winning something this season.
However, with chief executive Ferran Soriano and sporting director Txiki Begiristain, the former Barcelona pair has yet to show any public backing to their manager, a trophyless season might cost him the job at the Etihad.
His uncertain position is made further precarious, when defender Kolo Toure suggested City must win some silverware to safeguard their manager’s position at the club. He was quoted in the press:
“It is very important for the players to win [a trophy], because that will help the manager to be here for sure. We don’t want to end a season without winning something.
“I don’t know [if there will be changes]. That’s up to the board and the manager, but as player, we are just here to win.”
Mancini, who recently claimed that he is the best manager in England over the last 15 months, turned down a multi-million offer from Monaco and signed a five-year-contract after City won the title last season.
The Italian travelled to Genoa to watch Roma in action against Sampdoria and following the sacking of Zdenek Zeman earlier this month, has become the leading candidate for the Roma job.
The club has placed veteran coach Aurelio Andreazzoli in charge until the end of the season but club general manager Franco Baldini is looking to recruit a high profile manager in the summer. It is thought that Mancini’s ties with cross town rivals Lazio, who he served both as player and manager, will not influence a move for him.
