Newcastle United are looking to wrap up a deal for French striker Loic Remy after Marseille president Vincent Labrune has revealed that both the clubs have reached an agreement believed to be in the region of £8 million.

The 26-year-old Marseille forward hasn’t been in good form this season (scoring only one league goal) while his career has hit a snag through series of injuries.

Last week Marseille sporting director Jose Anigo admitted that the player could leave the club if the price is right and was left out of the squad for their trip to Ligue 1 outfit Sochaux on Sunday.

Newcastle lost Demba Ba in the January transfer window to Chelsea, after the Blues triggered his £7.5 million release clause inserted in the contract. The Magpies, in dire need of a striker, wasted no time in moving for Loic Remy to replace the Senegal international.

Labrune was quoted in the press:

“We have an agreement with Newcastle for the transfer of Remy. We have therefore given Loic permission to chat with them. For the rest we must wait patiently.”

Harry Redknapp tried to lure Remy to join QPR but the player himself rejected such moves and agreed to join the Tyneside club instead. He was seen in the North East on Sunday and had a meeting with Toon manager Alan Pardew.

Having already signed Remy’s international teammate Mathieu Debuchy for £5 million, Newcastle will be looking to give a positive spin to their disastrous campaign so far.

Loic Remy’s current teammate and former Newcastle player Joey Barton has backed the player by expressing his opinion on Twitter. He wrote:

“Good luck to Loic in Newcastle. Don’t worry I’ve told him what to expect. Great guy. Perfect club for him. #toonarmy.”
