Real Madrid have joined the race to sign PSG’s world class striker Edinson Cavani, according to reports from France.

French media speculated a lot on Cavani’s future over the past few months. The Uruguayan has had to adjust to the new system at PSG, where he was mostly played out of position, that led to speculation that the striker is unhappy with his new role and could move elsewhere in summer. And there were even reports that PSG were planning to sell Cavani to Chelsea, in a cash plus player swap deal offer for Belgium winger Eden Hazard.

Before heading to the World Cup in Brazil, Cavani was assured by PSG that he will be used as a number nine from next season, but French magazine Le 10 sport claims such promises hardly changes the scenario.

Manchester United were thought to be interested in Cavani as well, with The Guardian reported back in April that new manager Louis van Gaal wants to sign the Uruguayan to lead the forward line at Old Trafford.

However, such interests have cooled down as United camp no longer view him as a top priority. Le 10 sport now reports that European Champions Real Madrid are keen to add a world class striker to their ranks in the summer and have included Cavani on their shortlist.

Madrid are keen to sign Liverpool’s talisman striker Luis Suarez, however both coach Carlo Ancelotti and star player Cristiano Ronaldo want the Los Blancos to persist with Frenchman Karim Benzema, who has a contract till 2015.

To be honest, I can’t see any Premier League clubs going for Cavani in the summer. Chelsea have already agreed a deal for Diego Costa and would not spend £60m for another top striker. Likewise, bolstering the strike department should be the least concern for Van Gaal at Manchester United, as the Dutchman takes the onerous task of rebuilding the squad.
