After months of media speculation, Wayne Rooney seems finally to have settled his differences with Manchester United and looks increasingly likely to commit his future to the club.
Rumours are circulating that Rooney and his agent, Paul Stretford, have recently met with manager David Moyes and discussed his future at the club. While Rooney was still angry with Sir Alex Ferguson’s public announcement that the striker had asked to leave, Moyes has accepted that no such request had been made.
United goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel has recently commented on the details of Rooney’s alleged meeting with Ferguson:
“I know Sir Alex Ferguson came out and said that Wayne Rooney asked for a transfer, but I have spoken to him and he said he never did it.”
David Moyes also moved to reassure Rooney that he will feature prominently in the team this season, either playing upfront with prolific Dutchman Robin van Persie or as part of an attacking trio with Danny Welbeck or Wilfred Zaha.
Wayne Rooney’s reception from the Manchester United fans at Swansea was a crucial factor in persuading him to stay. He had expected to get booed by the travelling support but was delighted with the standing ovation he received.
He also seems to have made his peace with the players after appearing isolated from their goal celebrations in the match on Saturday, enjoying a team meal in Manchester’s city centre last night.
United boss Moyes will be delighted that the saga seems to be over. He has continually insisted that the £30 million valued man is not for sale, despite Jose Mourinho’s sustained attempts to woo the player.
Manchester United meet Chelsea on Monday and it will be a huge boost if Wayne Rooney commits his future to the club before the match. Rooney provided two assists in the match at the weekend and seemed to be getting back to his best. Against their Premiership rivals next week, United fans will be hoping that the England international can have an early impact on the title race and score the winner.
