La Liga side Villarreal are set to make an offer for Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo this summer, according to reports in Spain.

The Yellow Submarine have already narrowed their back-line by allowing Eric Bailly head into the other direction to make him Jose Mourinho’s first signing at Man Utd and are reportedly preparing to offer a loan deal for the Argentine defender.

Spanish outlet Marca claim that Villarreal are keen to strengthen their defense by signing the versatile defender with Champions League football set to return to the Estadio El Madrigal this season.

Rojo joined the Red Devils in 2014 but is now thought to be surplus to requirements in Mourinho’s plan at Man Utd and has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford all summer.

The 26-year-old has failed to cope with the attributes required to thrive in the Premier League and spent an injury-hit season under former boss Louis van Gaal, facing several weeks on the sidelines.

Rojo remains a leading candidate to be a victim of Mourinho’s arrival at Old Trafford, alongside other high-profile stars including Juan Mata and Bastian Schweinsteiger fancied for departure this summer.

The former Sporting Lisbon defender was part of the Argentina’s squad that reached the final of Copa America last month and has three more years left on his contract with Man Utd, who are hoping to recoup a sizeable portion of the £16 million fee they paid for Rojo two years ago.

However, Villarreal initially want Rojo on a season-long loan for the upcoming campaign before identifying whether the Argentine can fit into the club’s wage structure.
