Ander Herrera has backed Manchester United outcast Victor Valdes to regain his old form to once again become one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
The Spain international was a star during his time at Barcelona and he decided to leave the La Liga giants as a free agent after the end of the 2013-14 season. In the final few months of his career at Nou Camp, he picked up an injury and was ruled out for lengthy spell.
Valdes was without the club at the start of the last season and Louis van Gaal gave an opportunity for him to train with the club. Earlier in January, the Red Devils signed Valdes and handed him an 18-month contract.
The ex-Barcelona stopper has not featured for United and has not been included in the Dutchman’s squad at Old Trafford for this season. Van Gaal publicly criticises the Spaniard after claiming Valdes has not been following his philosophy at United.
Despite the current situation, Herrera believes Valdes will overcome the difficult situation and return to the top.
“I think he still has room to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world again. I think that just before his injury he was the best in the world. And he is working hard to recover that form,” Herrera told Catalunya Radio.
“His relationship with the manager is between them and I’m not anyone to discuss that. I can talk about him as his teammate and friend and I’m sure he is will be again what it was. Surely in the January market he will find a team to prove again what he is capable of as he is training for it.
“People who work for their target always achieve them and specially when they have Valdes’s ability. I want him to return to be who he was because when you see he working every day, you can see that he still much to give. I wish him the best soon, to find a team and prove again how good he is.”
Van Gaal signed Sergio Romero on a free transfer earlier in the window. He is the second choice goalkeeper behind David de Gea at Old Trafford. According to Spanish publication Don Balon, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has set his sights on United keeper.
In addition to this, Valdes’ agent has also admitted the Spanish goalkeeper would prefer to continue in the Premier League.
“We are relying on Manchester United letting Victor go. The Premier League is very attractive and Valdes want to stay because he has adapted perfectly to England, but we are not closing the door to any options,” Valdes agent Gines Carvajal said.
“There are still two months until the transfer window opens and there is nothing concrete, but the intention is to leave Manchester United.”
