Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is reportedly not convinced with Simon Mignolet as his first choice keeper and the German boss wants to bring in a player who can replace him in the Reds’ starting lineup.
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen was believed to a priority target for the former Borussia Dortmund manager for the next season. The German international has a €80m release clause in his contract, which runs down in 2019.
Klopp has now set his sights on signing Manchester United keeper Victor Valdes in January, accoridng to Spanish publication Don Balon. He joined the Old Trafford club on a free transfer earlier this January on a 18 month deal.
Valdes left Barcelona as a free agent and while he was at Nou Camp, he was a rumoured target for former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers. He decided against joining the Merseyside club and injury in the final months at Barcelona saw him end without a club in the first half of last season.
Louis van Gaal signed on a free transfer and handed him a contract. However, Valdes is not included in the Dutchman’s squad as he went ahead and signed Sergio Romero in the summer.
Valdes is not included in the first team at United and Klopp wants to persuade him to join him at Anfield. This move could still be possible in January after the goalkeeper’s agent admitted his client has set his sights on continuing in the Premier League.
“We are relying on Manchester United letting Victor go. The Premier League is very attractive and Valdes want to stay because he has adapted perfectly to England, but we are not closing the door to any options,” Valdes agent Gines Carvajal explained.
“There are still two months until the transfer window opens and there is nothing concrete, but the intention is to leave Manchester United.”
Should Valdes join Liverpool, he could replace Mignolet as their first choice keeper. Summer signing Adam Bogdan will drop down the pecking order, if he decides to continue at Anfield.
