Manchester United climbed to second in the league table, with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Southampton this evening.
Two goals from new signing Anthony Martial and one from Juan Mata gave Louis Van Gaal’s side an important three points.
Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City have all dropped points this week. Manchester United are expected to mount some sort of title challenge after another massive summer outlay and Van Gaal will be pleased after gaining some ground on their cross-town rivals.
The away side started the game slowly and were close to being punished early on by an excellent Southampton side. The home side were rewarded for their early pressure soon as Graziano Pelle scored within thirteen minutes.
Manchester United, motivated after the goal, came back into the game through Anthony Martial, who was well setup by Juan Mata. Martial put the visitors in lead after a catastrophic error from Yoshida. The young Frenchman capitalised on the back pass and scored at the start of the second half.
Manchester United looked in cruise control after Juan Mata doubled the advantage on the 68th minute.
However, the visitors had to survive a late scare after Pelle scored his second of the game, five minutes from time. David De Gea pulled off a couple of wonder saves to ensure that United went home with all three points.

Astonishing save from David De Gea! Jose Fonte’s header looks in but the Man United goalkeeper claws it away with his his left hand. — ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) September 20, 2015
This save from David De Gea is absolutely brilliant, thank god for Madrid being slow with paper-work https://t.co/EyYPaNdePS

What a save. Certain people hammered De Gea when he first signed. Now they have the front to heap praise on him. https://t.co/FdTdt5TIPa — michael owen (@themichaelowen) September 20, 2015
As brilliant as Martial was, as improved as Man Utd were, they must be so delighted to have kept De Gea who was outstanding..

Best thing about martial is his lack of emotion, he could massacre a village and score a hattrick with the same facial expression — Conor (@ConorSD) September 20, 2015
Martial though, what a calm & composed player he is. Very intellegint with his movement on the pitch & clinical finishing. He’s only 19. Wow

Southampton terrified every time martial gets the ball — James Robson (@JamesRobsonMEN) September 20, 2015
Martial proves how much of MUFC’s inefficiency up front was due to a lack of quality. Front 4 were not good enough. Martial the difference
