Roma captain Francesco Totti has signed a new one-year contract to stay at the club for one final season, the Italian giants announced on Tuesday.
Totti, who turns 40 in September, joined Roma in 1989 as a 12-year-old before making his first-team debut in March 1993 at the only age of 16.
“I really wanted this contract, it represents the realisation of my dream,” Totti said. “I always wanted to end my career having only worn one shirt – the Roma one.
The long-serving Roma striker has made a total of 758 appearances for the Giallorossi club, founding the net 304 times, eventually leading in both categories in the club’s all-time records.
Totti endured a tough season last campaign after suffering several injuries and dismal form but ended the season on a high, netting 5 goals and 4 assists to play a key role to help Roma finish third in Serie A. The veteran Italian was also reportedly involved in a bust-up with manager Luciano Spalletti, with several reports speculating that the player could be leaving the club.
Totti scored five goals in just 15 appearances last season and will play into his 40s for the upcoming campaign before ending his glittering career at the end of the next season.
“No one has played more games or scored more goals for this football club than Francesco Totti and we’re delighted that he will continue for one more season,” said AS Roma President Jim Pallotta.
“He’s earnt this contract and now we want Francesco’s final season on the pitch to be the start of a new era of success for AS Roma.”
Totti will play in his final and 25th season at Roma where he has spent his entire playing career, winning the Serie A once, the Coppa Italia twice and the Supercoppa Italiana twice.
