RobinVanPersieNetherlands1-Ecuador2014-GettyRobin van Persie should follow the footsteps of Teddy Sheringham in order to have a prolonged career, according to Manchester United legend Bryan Robson.

The striker will turn 31 later this August and has set his eyes on extending his career at top flight football till late 30’s. The former United striker is still the oldest player to feature in the Premier League.

Robson has urged the former Arsenal skipper to emulate Sheringham and play at top level till he reaches 40.

“A player like Robin van Persie can do it with the way he looks after himself. All he can do is look at the likes of Teddy Sheringham,” Robson told ManUtd.com.

“Being a centre-forward, it is a little bit more difficult to play to the level they set themselves until the age of 40 but Sheringham proved you can be capable of doing that if you are determined enough.”

Robson is adamant some footballers are written off too early and stresses there is plenty of evidence to support his case. People in the press often go on about players being too old as soon as they get to 30.”

“I can always remember that I left United when I was 38. I won a couple of titles, the European Cup Winners’ Cup, the FA Cup, and so I can never believe in this talk. If you a determined, like a Ryan Giggs, you can extend your career,” the former United skipper added.

United have seen several of their players play for the Old Trafford club till their late 30’s, which includes the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand.

The Red Devils veteran recently announced his retirement as a player and will now join the club’s incoming manager Louis van Gaal’s coaching staff and will be the Dutchman’s No 2 for the next season.
