Antoine Griezmann has penned down a new one-year contract extension at Atletico Madrid to keep him at the club until 2020.

The France International was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, who were reportedly willing to trigger his £87 million release clause but Griezmann has instead opted to prolong his stay after Atletico Madrid failed in their attempt to overturn their transfer ban.

The Los Colchoneros had an appeal against their transfer ban rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in June that will now prevent the club from signing any player until the January transfer window and Griezmann later claimed that it would be a ‘dirty move’ to leave Atletico after their transfer ban.

During an interview on the French TV earlier this summer, Griezmann stated that his chances of joining Manchester United were ‘six out of 10’ but the 26-year-old has now apologised for his comments after extending his stay at Atletico Madrid.

Griezmann said: The first thing that I want to do is apologise to the people who misunderstood my statements.

“Maybe I expressed myself badly or someone wanted to make news where there weren’t any, but since I came, I have given my all for my club, my team-mates and my coaching staff, and I’m very happy to live one more season with all of you.”

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has confirmed that Griezmann’s £87 million release clause has been retained in his new contract, although the French striker has received a pay rise.
Enrique Cerezo said: “I always said Griezmann was going to stay. We’ve kept his release clause the same and given him a pay rise.”
According to reports in Spain, Griezmann has now the become the highest-paid player in the club’s history, with an annual salary of around 14 million euros (£12.3m).
