Chelsea suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United at St James’ Park on a cold November rainy day. Frenchman Yoan Gouffran and Loic Remy scored second-half goals to give the Magpies a deserved victory against the inform men in Blues.
It was really a shocking performance for Jose Mourinho’s side who came into this match on the back of a six straight victories in all competitions. Apart from John Terry’s header that hit the bar and had a header cleared off the line, Chelsea didn’t create enough clear cut openings.
On the other hand, Newcastle were resolute at the back, composed in their approach and scored two brilliant goals to see off their opponents in style. First goal came from a brilliant set-piece taken by Yohan Cabaye from which Gouffran did extremely well, getting the better off John Terry and Ivanovic.
The second goal came in the dying minutes of the match, when from a brilliant counter-attack striker Loic Remy scored the winning goal.
Mourinho said after the match: “We deserved to lose. I’m not sure if Newcastle deserved to win but we definitely deserved to lose. We were too soft with the ball and too soft without the ball. We were not aggressive enough in possession.”
