Napoli’s sporting director Riccardo Bigon has admitted that the Partenopei want to keep hold of the Spanish stopper who has impressed under Rafa Benitez.

“He is a very important player on and off the field. We cannot do anything but wait for the end of the season to talk with him and with Liverpool. The club is interested in keeping him. He is a player who has been good here, that has a very close relationship with the Coach and also his family have settled very well.”

Napoli won the Coppa Italia last weekend beating Fiorentina by 3-1 in the final. Reina is due to return to Merseyside as he still has two years left in his contract at Anfield.

Reina, who has featured in 37 apearances for Napoli this season had earlier claimed that a chance to work with former boss Rafa Benitez was the main reason why he switched to Italy last summer. Since then the shot stopper has looked sharp and been at his very best for the Italian outfit.

With Brendan Rodgers preferring Simon Mignolet as the first choice goalkeeper for the Reds, Reina’s permanent move to Italy looks set to be imminent.
