Lyon can gain up to €14m from Anthony Martial’s transfer to Manchester United, the French club have confirmed.
Martial joined Monaco from Lyon for a paltry fee of €5m two years ago. He signed for Manchester United on a four year deal for a reported fee of £36m in the summer, which could rise to £57.6m if the performance-related-bonuses were taken into account.
According to reports from ESPN, Lyon included a 20 percent sell-on clause when they sold Martial. Lyon owner, and club president Jean-Michel Aulas says the French club should earn around €8m from Martial’s transfer to Old Trafford.
Lyon should also receive additional funds if Martial manages to hit the targets that are linked to €30m worth of bonus payments detailed in his contract.
“We’ll receive 20 percent of the supplementary payments of €30m when they are collected, probably in the next three or four years,” he is quoted as saying by RMC.
“They represent €6m to come in addition to the €8m already accounted for.”
The financial figures would have looked much better had Martial joined Chelsea instead of Manchester United.
According to reports from Daily Mail, Chelsea offered more than the £36m Manchester United paid to secure his signature.
However, Martial was determined to join United and United only, and he turned down the offer from the Blues.
A tweet by CanalPlus magazine read: ‘According to our information, Chelsea had proposed more money than Manchester United for Anthony Martial but the player dreamed of the Red Devils.’
Martial has taken the Premier League by storm, scoring four goals in seven appearances including a debut goal against United’s arch-rivals Liverpool.
