Manchester United will not entertain any bids for defender Chris Smalling, according to reports from Sky Sports.

The 25-year-old defender has made 22 Premier League appearances this season, including 18 starts, and has made marked improvement of late under Louis van Gaal.

However his contract is set to expire in the summer. ESPN understands that Smalling has yet to begun talks over signing a new contract extension with the club, which has only fuelled further speculations on his future.

Smalling, who joined United from Fulham in 2010 for an undisclosed fee, has been attracting interest from Premier League rivals Arsenal, but Sky Sports sources understand that the Old Trafford club are not looking to sell him at the moment.

Manchester United are expected to spend heavily in the summer, and reports suggest that Louis van Gaal is actively looking to sign a top central defender.

Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels is thought to be one of the reported targets, although the German giants are reluctant to sell their prized asset at the moment.

Smalling has done well in recent months to secure regular first team places under van Gaal that could prompt United to tie him up with a long term contract. Based on the report, it seems United have no plans of selling the England international at the moment, especially to their nearest Premier League rivals.
