Champions League football returns this week as Manchester United, Milan, Madrid and Lyon kick off the knockout stages of Europe’s premier club competition.
Tonight sees Manchester United playing away to AC Milan and Lyon hosting Real Madrid – with both traveling teams eager to break their losing streaks away from home against their opponents as well as generally break the hoodoo Milan and Lyon have over their performances.
These records will be broken tonight, and here’s how we’re tipping the games to pan out:
Milan v Manchester United
With United’s defence still recovering from injury and Milan’s defenders not at their best, goals are obvious. The question is who will win and who will score.
I’ve backed United to get a draw from this game (21/10) – Milan have enough star players to create goals and United will be content with a draw as long as they can get an away goal.
In scorers, I’m backing Wayne Rooney to open the scoring for United (10/3) – he will be the one causing Milan’s backline the most problems. Plus I’ve also gone for David Beckham getting a goal in this game (5/1) – there will be more free kick opportunities given that this is a Champions League games and fouls get called for trivial offenses, and Leonardo will know it’s something he can use, especially in the second half.

Lyon v Real Madrid
Real Madrid will score at Stade Gerland, no doubts about it. There’s not even a question of ‘who will score’, it can be only one man, Cristiano Ronaldo, who has over the last few years developed an uncanny knack for scoring important match-winning goals for his teams. I’m backing Ronaldo to open the scoring for Real Madrid (12/5).
As far as the result is concerned, the game should be more open than most, and a 2-2 draw (11/1) is a nice bet to have, although it’s not something I’m relying on. Most people are backing Madrid to beat Lyon, but they tend to raise their game and this is certainly an occasion where Lyon will be taking the fight to Madrid.
