Manchester United defender Guillermo Varela joins Frankfurt on loan

Manchester United defender Guillermo Varela has joined Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt on a season-long loan deal, the club has confirmed the move on Saturday.

The Uruguayan International joined the Premier League giants in 2013 from Penarol to become the first signing of David Moyes’ unsuccessful tenure in charge of the Red Devils.

Varela posted a picture on his Facebook page holding the jersey of the Bundesliga club with the caption, ‘New adventure’ that gives another confirmation of his transfer move from United.

The young full-back spent the 2013/14 campaign on loan at Real Madrid Castilla, although he was included in the Los Blancos’ first team squad for the Champions League that season.

The 23-year-old made 11 appearances for the Premier League giants last season under Louis van Gaal but new Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly identified Varela surplus to requirements in his plans for the Red Devils.

Frankfurt finished 16th in the Bundesliga last season and will be hoping to secure Varela on a permanent transfer next summer.

Man Utd have already released goalkeeper Victor Valdes and young midfielder Nick Powell after opting against offering them new contracts.

High-profile star players including Bastian Schweinsteigerr and Juan Mata have also been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, but Mourinho claimed on Friday that he expects Mata to stay at the club this summer.
