The 62-year-old has long been linked with the vacant position at Old Trafford, with interim boss Ryan Giggs sure to leave his post at the end of the season.

Van Gaal, who was speaking near Hoenderloo at the start of a three-day World Cup training camp, told BBC Sport of his desire to take over at the club, which he described as the biggest club in the world.

“I would love the job,” said Van Gaal. “I hope that I shall be the one. It’s the biggest club in the world and it’s a fantastic challenge.”

The former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach is fully focused on Holland’s World Cup adventure however,

“I have to focus on my job,” he told the BBC’s Dan Roan,

“I am coach of the Dutch national team. I have waited a long time to be in a World Cup so that’s very important.

“This doesn’t affect me. I have always had offers. I know what the football world is and what it means.”

United are expected to appoint their new manager early next week.
