Sevilla’s Ukrainian winger, Yevhen Konoplyanka has hit out at the overall quality of the Premier League and has claimed that he made the right decision to move to La Liga.
Konoplyanka was a transfer target for Liverpool, Tottenham and Stoke City. The former Dnipro winger caught the eye of several European sides after his performances with Ukraine and then in the Europa league.
After a long and drawn out saga, Konoplyanka’s dream move to Liverpool never materialised in 2014 and the player claimed that he regrets the incident. Furthermore, he also claimed that it was his dream to play in the Premier League one day.
After a failed transfer to England and lack of significant offers this summer, it seems Konoplyanka has turned sour. The Sevilla winger mocked the quality of players in England and implied that they are physical and cannot control a ball.
“If I was two-and-a-half metres tall and didn’t know how to control a ball then I may have gone to England, but here [in Spain], the football’s more technical. It’s the best,” he said.
“I don’t regret coming to Spain. I didn’t receive many offers. Some came from the Premier League and Sevilla and Atlético from Spain, but I kept thinking that Sevilla were right for me.
“I was very anxious when making my choice, to the point that I got nervous and lost three kilos beforehand. I loved Sevilla’s insistence on signing me, so I think I made the right decision.”
Judging by his tune now, Konoplyanka perhaps regrets not moving to England more than ever. As for the Premier League, as good as a player he is, there is no dearth of quality wide players in England and the teams interested in him will do just fine.
