Just when it looked that Juan Mata would finally start making an impact for Manchester United, rumours have circulated in the media that his former club Valencia are looking to tempt him back to Spain in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Mata was at his dazzling best against Tottenham on Sunday as United cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win at old Trafford. It was Mata’s first Premier League start in over two months, but English tabloid Daily Mirror reports that Valencia are willing to offer £20m to United to get their former play maker back.
The reports also states that Valencia owner Peter Lim and President Amadeo Salvo made a trip to Manchester last weekend in their mission to try and sign Mata back from the Red Devils. United had earlier signed Mata for a whopping £37m from Chelsea in the January transfer window last year but the 26 year old has struggled to even cement a starting eleven place under Louis Van Gaal.
It will be interesting to see if United do cash in Mata to raise money for their other targets. But the reports really come at a wrong time for the player who by the looks of things, seemed to have been back at his best against Spurs.
The Spaniard has featured in 24 appearances this season, 18 of those which were in the starting eleven in the earlier part of this current campaign. However, Mata completed 88% of his passes against Tottenham and was equally effective with his defensive contribution, tracking back with intent and using his guile to recycle possession for his side.
