Manchester United‘s long term target, Gonçalo Guedes, has bid his goodbyes to his club teammates and fans of Benfica. The Portuguese winger is close to leaving the club in January, and his preferred destination is Manchester United.
According to reports from Portugal newspaper, Record, Guedes could join Manchester United or PSG in the January transfer window. The player wasn’t picked in Benfica’s 4-0 win against Tondela this weekend. He was dropped from the match day squad which has fuelled further speculation about his future.
The British media are reporting that the Portugal international has agreed to a January move, and he is believed to have held talks with United officials.
United have been closely following the winger’s development for sometime now. United scouts have watched him on several occasions over the past six months, and the club even sent a delegation to run the rule over the talented young winger last year.
Rui Vitória, the Benfica manager, didn’t sound absolutely convincing when asked about Guedes. He admitted that he has been given no indication that the player would leave in January, and it is up to the President of Benfica to make the final call.
He said, as quoted by Record:
“The coach make decision, I’ve decided not to pick him for this game. There were others to play and I chose that way. I do not have any indication that Goncalo will leave, the president knows what to do about ‘Gonçalos’.”
There is a probably a strong interest from United, otherwise why would the club scouts make frequent visits to watch the player? It remains to be seen whether Guedes will still be a Benfica player come the end of the January transfer window.
