Genoa v Inter Milan Preview – Serie A – 17th October 2009

Genoa v Inter Milan
Saturday 17 October 2009
Stadio Luigi Ferraris
Kick-Off: 20:45 CET

Inter Milan

Diego Milito is likely miss the opportunity to face his former club as Inter Milan travel to Genoa for Saturday night’s match.

Milito’s attempted comeback against Udinese was short-lived (25 minutes to be exact) and it is feared that the Argentine will be sidelined for an additional two weeks with a muscle strain, and miss this match.

Patrick Vieira has drawn close media attention recently for statements linking him with a move. The French midfielder has spoken out about his dissatisfaction in the amount of playing time he has received at Inter in the early stages of the Serie A campaign.

Given the options available to Jose Mourinho, however, it’s understandable why it would be hard to make room for the seasoned veteran.

Esteban Cambiasso, Dejan Stankovic and the addition of Wesley Sneijder means that playing time in the centre of Inter’s midfield is at a premium. Sneijder, who joined Inter from Real Madrid, has quickly adapted to the Italian game and has burst onto the scene.

Genoa

Genoa have picked up where they left off last season and are continuing to play the football that so nearly rewarded them with a Champions League birth.

Gian Piero Gasperini has worked wonders for Genoa since he was appointed manager and the club are showing no signs of slowing down.

After seven matches, Genoa sit just outside the top four in a solid fifth place.

While Genoa do not necessarily possess a squad full of names that jump out at you, the team is competent and rarely puts in a poor performance. Sergio Floccari, who often spearheads a three-man attacking core for Gasperini, could easily be considered one of the most underrated players in the league.

Genoa’s recent 3-1 victory away over Bologna, despite being down to ten men for nearly all of the second half, is the latest in a run of positive results for the club.

Prediction

The two teams met three times last season. The league match at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza ended in a 0-0 draw, whilst Inter won the other two meetings, including a 2-0 win at Genoa.

Inter tend to raise their game against top competition, and in Italy at present, there are not many teams better than Genoa. With a number of great matches taking place this weekend in the Serie A, expect this one to be one of the top encounters.

Prediction: Genoa 1 – Inter Milan 2
