The 30-year-old striker is serving a two game suspension because of violent conduct.
Major League Soccer Discipline Committee on Wednesday announced that DC United’s Designated Player Eddie Johnson, will be serving a two game suspension and was fined an undisclosed amount after performing a violent act against Real Salt Lake defender on Saturday’s 3-0 road defeat.
The Florida native picked up the suspension after fouling and knocking RSL defender Carlos Salcido to the ground, the foul was not the cause for the suspension. What caused the suspension, while Salcido was on the ground Johnson kicked the ball directly at his lower back.
During the game he only received a yellow card for his actions, but the MLS Discipline Committee decided to punish the U.S. international. He will miss the home match against the Colorado Rapids on Aug. 17, and the important road game versus the first place team in the Eastern Conference, Sporting Kansas City on Aug.23.
With United in second place and only five points ahead of third place Toronto FC (32 points) and two points behind first place Sporting (39 points), a defeat in their next two matches could impact their position by the time their DP returns. If DC does lose in the next two games, their current losing streak will go to four and a possible drop to third place could potentially happen.
However, the struggling forward who only has four goals in 1577 minutes played so far, will still be able to suit up for United while serving his two-game suspension. DC will be playing in their CONCACAF Champions League group stage home match against Jamaican side, Waterhouse FC, at RFK Stadium on Aug. 20. The 6’0 forward will be able to play if selected, since, it is not an MLS match.
