Super agent Jorge Mendes has confirmed (reported by Spanish media outlet AS) that there are ongoing negotiations between Manchester United and David De Gea over a contract extension. The Spanish shot-stopper has entered the final 18 months of his contract after arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2011 in a £18.3m deal.
Last week we had reported that De Gea would stay at United for the next season, as claimed by Mendes, despite the significant interest from Real Madrid who are keen to bring the player back to his home city.
Mendes has given an update claiming that the deal is not done as of now and nothing has been signed yet, “I’m negotiating the renewal. We have not signed anything for now. The players decide what they want from negotiations and at first it seems we are able to continue there, but no, nothing has signed yet.”
The recent developments and Mendes’ comments will come as huge respite for the United faithful. Over the past we have seen, very few players turn down a move to play at the Santiago Bernabeu. For De Gea, the prospect of returning to his home city and given that his pop star girlfriend Edurne Garcia Almagro is also in Madrid is also be a huge lure.
United though simply can’t lose the goalkeeper who has been in stunning form this season and has bailed them out repeatedly whenever called to action.
