Ajax boss Frank de Boer believes Dutch winger Memphis Depay can become a great player for Manchester United.
The 21-year-old enjoyed a great 2014/15 campaign for PSV, where he topped the Eredivisie scoring charts with 22 goals prior to his transfer to United and helped his side win the Dutch league title.
De Boer feels that Depay has all the requisite talent to be a successful player at Manchester United, and he is confident Louis van Gaal is the right man to move his game forward.
“I think Depay needs that kind of coach,” he told Omnisport.
“He has a great mentality but still he is very young and has to know what he has to do to stay on that level or even get better – I think Van Gaal is the right person for that.
“I think he can be a great player for Manchester United because he has everything – he has speed, he has technique, he can score goals and physically he is very strong.
“He normally never gets injured and for his age he has played a lot of games for PSV.”
Depay has made 13 appearances for United this season and has scored four goals. He has been brilliant in patches, but has failed to live up to his billing, managing just one goal in eight Premier League games.
Talent has never been question for Depay but the youngster probably needs to sort out his attitude problems. While De Boer has praised Depay’s “mentality”, recently former Dutch international Youri Mulder has criticised the player’s attitude, saying “Manchester United are starting to get fed up with this.”
Manchester United are probably the only club in England where wing play has been given so much importance in the club’s illustrious history. The Red Devils have produced some of the world’s greatest ever wingers like David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo et al, and Depay has all the potential to emulate those legendary figures at the club.
