Chelsea have made a late attempt to sign Roma’s highly rated defender Kostas Manolas, according to reports in Italy.

The Blues have made a stuttering start to the season, having suffered two defeats already within first four matches. The defensive unit has looked vulnerable, with skipper John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic have performed below par so far.

Jose Mourinho has felt the need to sign a central defender before the window slams shut on Tuesday night. According to reports in France, Chelsea have already agreed a deal to sign Papy Djilobodji from Nantes, but Mourinho is still looking to add a defender who can be drafted straight away into the first team.

Having missed out on John Stones, Chelsea have shifted their attention to Greek defender Kostas Manolas. The 24-year-old defender joined Roma last season from Olympiacos and the Giallorossi have intentions of selling him at the moment.

According to reports from The Times, Roma have rejected Chelsea’s opening bid for Manolas. It remains to be seen whether the Blues make another attempt to sign him today.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have have turned down an £8.8m offer from Napoli for Kurt Zouma. The last few hours could get very interesting for the Blues!
