Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has revealed that he spoke to Real Madrid about a potential move before he joined Chelsea.
The former Barcelona player was a man in demand when he decided to leave Camp Nou and there were several clubs interested in him including Real Madrid.
Fabregas has revealed in his interview with Marca that he was one step away from being a Real Madrid player.
“There was contact with different presidents over the space of several years, but no deal was ever struck. We discussed terms, but nothing final was ever agreed. That decisive step was never taken”, he said.
Fabregas has been a key player for Chelsea since joining them and helped them to a league title last season.
The Spanish midfielder has been criticised for his defensive contributions this season but in truth the former Arsenal captain is not to blame for Chelsea’s woes.
The Premier League champions have underperformed massively and that is down to every player playing badly.
Fabregas has often been the scapegoat for Chelsea struggling in the midfield but he has been their primary source of creativity from the midfield.
With the likes of Oscar, Costa and Hazard struggling badly, Fabregas has been under immense pressure to deliver.
Furthermore, his midfield partner Nemanja Matic has been poor as well and therefore the Chelsea midfielder has been overrun plenty of times this season.
Looking back at it, Real Madrid would perhaps have been a safer move for Fabregas but the Spaniard is happy at Chelsea and in the Premier League.
The Chelsea star was unplayable against England last week and will aim to keep up that form and help his side turn their season around.
