According to an exclusive report from British media outlet Daily Express, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho wants the see a major overhaul on how contracts are given to players at the club. It is believed that experienced Serbian defender Branislav Ivanovic is set to be handed a one year contract extension worth £90,000 a week.
This is in line with the Blues’ policy of handing one year rolling contracts to players who are above 30. Mourinho though feels that the club must break its policy to keep Ivanovic for a longer time given that the defender is indispensable for the squad. The Portuguese wants that Ivanovic should be given a longer extension, possibly one-year with an option for a second.
Ivanovic has been a fantastic acquisition for Chelsea and co go down as one of the club’s best ever signings. The player joined from Lokomotiv Moscow in January 2008 for just £9m. Mourinho had earlier called the defender: “A competitive animal with a big heart.”
The reports states that Ivanovic is set to follow countryman Nemanja Matic, captain John Terry and dazzling winger Eden Hazard in getting new contracts for the Stamford Bridge side.
