According to Mercato365, Chelsea are looking to sign Athletic Bilbao defender, Aymeric Laporte after failing to land Everton defender, John Stones.
The Bilbao centre back is one of the most sought after defensive talents in world football and has a release clause of around 50 million euros. Laporte has been linked with a move away from Bilbao several times since last season.
According to rumours, Manchester United were also keeping tabs on the talented Frenchman.
It appears that Chelsea have made the first move for the talented defender.
Jose Mourinho and Chelsea spent all summer chasing the England defender, John Stones. However, with Everton digging their heels, Stones’ pursuit has hit a dead end.
Although the player submitted a transfer request, Everton manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that the player is not for sale at any price.
Chelsea can expect a similar response from Bilbao, who would be unwilling to let go of their best defender so late in the window. However, unlike Stones, Laporte has a release clause and if Chelsea decide to pay 50 million euros for the French centre back, there is nothing the Basque outfit can do to prevent the transfer.
Jose Mourinho is in desperate need of defenders after their dismal start to the campaign and it will be interesting to see if he can pull off the Laporte transfer so late in the window.
