According to Spanish publication AS, Chelsea have submitted a €55m offer for Monaco’s young forward, Anthony Martial.
Martial has attracted a lot of interest from European heavyweights, following his impressive season with Monaco last year and was rumoured to be on his way to Valencia.
It was reported that Martial’s representatives were present at the Mestalla last summer when it seemed like the French sensation would leave Monaco. However, the transfer never quite materialized.
Fast forward to this summer, Chelsea have reportedly offered €55m to Monaco for the talented young forward.
Earlier this summer, Tottenham tried their luck with Monaco and were rebuffed.
Although AS are a credible source, it is strange that Chelsea would offer such a huge sum of money for someone so young and unproven.
Martial’s talent and ability is beyond doubt and in the right environment he could well grow into a world class forward in the next few years.
But paying €55m for him at this point of time seems like a foolish move from Chelsea, who are usually very prudent in the market.
Chelsea are looking to sign goalscorers, but after sealing the Pedro transfer from Barcelona it is highly unlikely that Jose Mourinho will splash such a huge sum of money on Martial.
Especially with their defensive problems and the ridiculous demands from Everton for John Stones.
