As Liverpool get ready to host Tottenham on Tuesday night at Anfield, Brendan Rodgers has revealed his admiration for Harry Kane but states that Daniel Sturridge remains England’s top striker. The young Spurs striker has been in stunning form this season scoring 22 goals in all competitions and his double strike against Arsenal on Saturday helped win the North London derby for his side.
Liverpool will be well aware of Kane’s attacking prowess on Tuesday as a fascinating encounter awaits between two sides who are separated by just 4 points. An all English attacking force is also on the cards as Daniel Sturridge could be in line for his first start for five months.
Ahead of the crunch encounter Rodgers said, “For me there’s not anyone better than Daniel Sturridge. He’s got everything in his game if he’s playing consistently. His goal-scoring record, his pace, his power, he’s got everything.”
“But I’m sure Daniel will look at it that there’s another young English striker coming through and that will really help him when they come together at international level.”
Liverpool have endured an indifferent season with Sturridge missing the majority of the campaign due to injuries. The void left by Luis Suarez’s departure to Barcelona is also yet to be filled as the Reds chase a Champions League berth for next season.
Chris Bascombe of the Daily Telegraph writes that Liverpol’s academy director Alex Inglethorpe is a former youth and reserve coach at White Hart Lane and is well aware of Kane’s talents.
So how will Liverpool counter Kane’s ability? Rodgers said, “Alex Inglethorpe has worked with all those boys at Spurs so he knows them very, very well professionally and personally. I am just glad he has come in and been given the opportunity and he has shown by being given them the qualities he has.”
