According to reports from the Mirror, Portuguese winger Nani is set to return to Manchester United in the summer after his loan spell at Sporting Lisbon. The 28 year old was earlier handed a five year contract by formr United manager David Moyes in 2013 but the player had been told that he doesn’t feature in Louis Van Gaal’s plans at old Trafford.

As Sporting can’t afford to make his loan spell permanent due to his £110,000-a-week wages, Nani is now heading for a return to the Premier League. This will see the winger as the highest paid reserve in the league or else teh Red Devils will have to find suitors for the player whom they rate at £12m.

Should United fail to find a potential suitor for Nani, they will be left to face the prospect of a £17m bill for the remainder of the player’s contract. The Old Trafford side are already well stocked with wingers Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia, Angel Di Maria and Adnan Januzaj. They have also signed Memphis Depay for a £25m fee.

The current scenario surely means Nani has no future at the club despite impressing in his loan spell, with 11 goals in 35 appearances. The player has accepted he has no option but to return to the Red Devils. “The fans [at Sporting] asked me to stay, but we all know it’s hard. I am very happy to have spent a year at Sporting, but I have a contract with Manchester United and my ambitions are different this time.”
