Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler believes the addition of Southampton striker Rickie Lambert would be great for the Merseyside club.
Earlier today, we reported the Reds are closing in on a £4m deal (plus add-ons) for the England international as Lambert was closing in on completing his switch to Anfield in the next few days. The former Liverpool striker, Folwer believes the addition of the Saints star will be a “magnificent” for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
“[He would be] a magnificent one. For £4m you’re getting a recognised striker who scores goals in the Premier League and who can hold balls up,” Fowler told Talksport.
“He’s probably what Liverpool need. I think he’s got a little bit of everything. It doesn’t fit with what Liverpool were saying about young players coming in but for £4m I don’t think you can argue with it.”
The Anfield outfit has the services of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez as the first choice striker. Lambert has been in good form for Southampton during the 2013-14 season, where he scored 13 goals and had 10 assists to his name from 37 league appearances.
Fowler believes Lambert’s addition will improve Liverpool’s squad depth and at the same time strengthen the Reds’ strike force.
“It gives Liverpool more and more options in attack which is what I think they need,” the former Liverpool striker said.
Lambert is aware that his potential move to Liverpool will see his playing time being limited. Despite that, the 32-year-old is likely to complete a switch to Anfield as he would not reject a chance to join his club, which he supported from his childhood days.
