Former Rangers star Ian Murray has claimed that Kamberi is not good enough to stay at the club permanently.
The attacker is currently on loan from Hibs and he has managed to score just one goal for the Ibrox giants so far.
Murray is clearly not impressed and he says that it would be surprising to see Rangers sign him permanently after the loan deal expires.
He also added that you to have a special player in order to play as a striker for Rangers and Kamberi only got the move because of Defoe’s injury. Also, he revealed that the Hibs fans do not want to see Kamberi back at the club and that says all about his quality as a player.
Murray said: “Kamberi looked like a last-minute panic signing for Rangers because of Defoe’s injury. I was surprised they went for him and I’ll be even more surprised if they want to keep him. I don’t think he has shown enough in the games I’ve seen him in. To play for Rangers in that position you need to be a special player. There have been guys who get 20 goals a season and can’t get a starting berth at Ibrox. It’s a competitive area of the pitch and I’m not sure Kamberi’s the type of guy who can handle not being the No.1 guy. To be the main striker at Rangers you need to be a real top-level player. Kamberi would always be a back-up to someone else at that club.”
There is no doubt that Rangers need to improve their attack in the summer but Murray’s claims are certainly not wide off the mark.
Although Kamberi is not a bad player, he is not the type of player who could help Rangers bridge the gap with Celtic.
Steven Gerrard should look to bring in better quality players like Morelos and Hagi who can take the club forward.
It will be interesting to see what happens at the end of this season.
Currently, the season is on hold due to the Coronavirus pandemic and Rangers will want to finish on a high when football resumes.
