Chelsea midfielder Gael Kakuta is extremely close to completing a move to La Liga side Sevilla according to the club’s Director of Sport, Monchi. In an interview to AS, Monchi has stated that negotiations with Chelsea are at an advanced stage.
“The deal is quite close, although nothing has been closed yet. Talks with Chelsea and the player are at an advanced stage so I’m feeling quite optimistic that it will go through”, he said.
The 23 year-old Kakuta has been at Stamford Bridge since 2007, and was promoted to the first team in 2009. He was said to be one of the hottest young players in the Premier League, but hardly managed to find any first-team action with the Blues. In 6 years, he has only made 6 league appearances for Chelsea.
He has been sent away on loan to a whole host of clubs in several different countries, but has failed to impress enough to make it into the reckoning with his parent club. His most recent club was Rayo Vallecano in Spain, where he played majority of the games and scored 5 goals.
Now it looks like Chelsea are considering letting him go on a permanent basis, and Sevilla are extremely close to striking a deal. The attacking midfield position at Stamford Bridge is full of cut-throat competition, and even a player with the quality of Juan Cuadrado hardly gets much playing time.
Sevilla sold Aleix Vidal to Barcelona last week and even though the fee was undisclosed, Monchi said that the move had given them the spending power to build a squad capable of competing for trophies. They have won the Europa League for the last two years now and will be in the Champions League next season.
It will be interesting to see whether Kakuta can fulfill the promise he showed all those years ago with Chelsea, as he looks to play a major role at a top club for the first time. For all we know, Sevilla will draw the Premier League champions in the group stages of the Champions League.
